Preston Shoe History

Handling containers and flats in the 1960’s-70’s was inefficient owing to rate of adoption of containerization and availability of safe reliable freight coupling devices. Accidents were frequent and the Port of Preston Authority commissioned the development of a safe lifting lug suitable for use in ISO corner fittings used in an assortment of freight units that passed through the port before standardisation of containers and platforms.
A prototype was developed and patented that complied with the mandatory BS regulations, but required the approval of Lloyd’s Register of Shipping before being insured prior to service in The Port of Preston The lug was rapidly adopted by ports bordering the west coast of England and Wales where they where initially called Paddies Feet and subsequently morphed into Preston Shoes?
The lug underwent further refinement and has been in production since 1979 to date for handling any containment unit fitted with ISO corner fittings as shown here in this complex lift of a process unit.
